Few things can cultivate a creative community like a strong independent bookstore. Luckily, we are blessed with several great ones. Here are two of our very favorite independent bookstores in Houston:
You will be hard-pressed to find a better all-around independent bookseller than Brazos Bookstore. Karl Kilian opened Brazos in 1974 to foster the growth of Houston’s literary scene. Famous authors Larry McMurtry, Edward Albee, and Donald Barthelme were all regular customers during their stints in Houston. In fact, the store is still the favored hangout of local authors looking to score their next read.
Brazos Bookstore continues to be locally owned by a group of twenty-seven Houstonians who came together and purchased the bookstore when Kilian announced his retirement in 2006. You can learn about their current staff here. Further, Brazos also hosts a variety of events, from weekly book clubs to readings.
Murder By The Book
Just up the street on Bissonnet, you will find Murder by The Book, one of the nation’s oldest and largest mystery specialty bookstores. Created by Martha Farrington back in 1980, this local fixture was purchased by McKenna Jordan in 2009.
The store stocks over 25,000 books, including new and used, first editions, collectibles, gift items, mystery magazines, and more. Murder by the Book also hosts over 200 of the hottest mystery, crime, and fantasy authors for book signing events every year. You can check their calendar for all upcoming events.
